We live in a fast shrinking globalized world. One major setback caused by the Global Financial Crisis was that in many countries the achievements in reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) slowed to a crawling pace, or came to an abrupt halt, or, in some extreme cases, descended into negative territory. To create a poverty free world, it is important that we succeed in achieving the MDG. We should take some time for deeper introspection and rethinking of our conducts so as to prevent such worldwide crisis from ever happening again.
In 2009, Grameen Trust (GT) had another successful year of working towards its vision of creating a poverty free world and achieving its mission of reducing poverty through promoting poverty focused microcredit programs following the Grameen Bank Approach (GBA).
Grameen Trust successfully launched three directly implemented programs this year: Family Bank in Bahrain, Grameen Carso in Oaxaca, Mexico, and Microcredit Initiative of Grameen (MIG) in the Indian state of Kerala. Progress has been made in setting up microcredit programs in Sichuan and Inner Mongolia in China, as well as in Colombia and Scotland, UK.
A holistic approach to elevating people of an entire region out of poverty through social business and microcredit was envisioned this year at the Global Grameen Meeting in Germany. At the invitation of the government of the State of Caldas, Grameen Trust will lead the creation of a social business movement to raise an entire region out of poverty through implementing microcredit programs and supporting social business initiatives in Caldas, Colombia. We hope to replicate this model in many parts of the world.
I extend my congratulations to Grameen Trust, its management and staff, as well as donors, partners and well-wishers, for continuing their efforts at a challenging time to serve the poorest around the world with Grameen microcredit and social business initiatives.
We extend our thanks to our partners, donors and supporters. We look forward to working together with more vigor and commitment in the coming years.
