In an attempt to combat poverty in Guatemala, which has 56.2% population living below the poverty line, the Asociacion Civil Guatemalteca Grameen Credit (ACGGC); a Build Operate and Transfer project of Grameen Trust was set up in December 2005 with the financial assistance from the Whole Planet Foundation. The project became operational in April 2006.

Despite facing many challenges such as language barrier, legal complexities associated with getting registration, obtaining visa and work permit for the Bangladeshi staff at the initial stage of project operation, the Asociacion Civil Guatemalteca Grameen Credit has been very successful in terms of its member outreach and providing qualitative services to its clientele. The project surpassed its initial target of reaching 4,500 members within a period of three years. By 2007, ACGGC was operating in three regions of Guatemala - Panajachel, Nahuala, and San Lucas Toliman.

Following the success of ACGGC, an agreement between Grameen Trust, Whole Planet Foundation and Banrural, one of the largest commercial banks in Guatemala, was signed in 2007 to implement the project through collaboration namely Banrural Grameen Microfinanzas (BGM). It started its operation in early 2008. Upto December 2009, BGM has opened 18 branches and reached more than 20,000 members. The average loan size of BGM is USD 180. Members have utilized the loans in handicrafts, cloth, nursery and poultry businesses.

In 2009, Banrural Grameen Microfinanzas has been able to reach out to 10,777 members by disbursing loans amounting to USD 5,293,205. In this year, BGM received USD 2,934,963 as repayment from the borrowers. The Banrural Grameen Microfinanzas has maintained 100% repayment rate since inception.
